Champlain Bridge blasting contracted

An Idaho company has won the bid to blow up the Lake Champlain Bridge, an event that state officials expect will attract a crowd of onlookers. Advanced Explosives Demolition Inc. of Coeur D'Alene will be paid $188,000 for the demolition work, state Agency of Transportation spokesman John Zicconi said. That does not include collection of debris, which is the responsibility of the main contractor, Harrison & Burrowes Bridge Constructors Inc., he said. More

More than 80 years after a catastrophic explosion at Picatinny Arsenal, the Army Corps of Engineers believes there may still be live shells on adjacent private property. Today, the federal agency is scheduled to begin a project to find and remove any of those explosives, working on the western border of the Tilcon stone quarry, near Mount Hope Road in Rockaway Township, N.J. Exploding chewing gum kills student

A Ukrainian man's jaw was blown off after he laced his chewing gum with an unknown substance, local authorities in the country's Sumy region said of the man who died from his injuries. A chemistry student at the Kiev Polytechnic Institute who was identified only by his first name Vladimir liked to chew gum and dip it in citric acid, his family said. More

Blowing up the leaning 31-story, 55,000-ton, reinforced concrete building took 1,550 pounds of explosives, a plunger like the one Wile E. Coyote uses in the Looney Tunes cartoons, and 12 1/2 seconds. On Friday afternoon, a crowd gathered at the top of the Philadelphia Museum of Art's iconic steps in the frigid cold to witness an "explosion event" and meditation on the passing of time and renewal by Chinese artist Cai Guo Qiang.
